Safety Tips

Electric Space Heaters
  • Use the heaters on the floor only and not on furniture.
  • Use heaters with tip-over shut-offs.
  • Do not use in wet or moist places
  • Do not put cords under rugs or have objects on top of rugs.
  • Do not use an extension cord.
  • Make sure the plug fits securely in the outlet.
  • Do not use a heater that trips a ground fault circuit.

Space Heaters

  • Select a heater with a guard around the flame area or heating element.
  • Place a heater on a hard, level surface - not on rugs or carpet.
  • Always shut the heater off before leaving.
  • Never store flammable liquids near the heater.
  • Place the heater at least three (3) feet away from other objects or furnishings.
  • Never use the heater as a dryer.
  • Never operate a heater that is missing parts.

Kerosene Heaters

  • Never use gasoline or camping fuel - only use 1-K kerosene.
  • Store kerosene in a container for kerosene only.
  • Never fill the tank past the full line.
  • Do not remove the fuel tank or move the heater when it is hot or in operation.
  • If a flare-up occurs, do not move the heater . . . use the shut-off valve. If this doesn't work, leave the area as kerosene is extremely flammable. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire with water or blankets.
  • Always refuel outside - vapors are combustible.
  • Make sure the area has proper ventilation while the heater is in operation.
  • Cotton and fiberglass wicks are not interchangeable.

What’s the buzz-z-z-z on . . . Chain Saw Safety?

The most common cause of injury is kickback. When your saw chain binds in the woods or the tip of the saw touches an object, the saw can violently “kick-back” at you. To lessen the likelihood of kickback:

  • Hold the saw with both hands.
  • Clear the area of obstructions.
  • Ensure that the saw isn’t touching anything when you start the engine.
  • Cut only when operating at high speeds.
  • Never cut anything above shoulder height.
  • Maintain your saw so that it is clean, and the chain is sharp with proper tension.
  • Only use manufacturer-specified replacement parts.
  • Think before you do!!!
