Safety Town 2017 was held July 24-27 at Galion Primary School. 48 kids participated in the week-long program focused on safety.
Safety Town is offered for free by the Galion Police Department each year for area children entering kindergarten. Officer Ralph Burwell and Chief Brian Saterfield led this year’s program, with help from parents and volunteers.
In addition to the Police Department, other safety programs were led by Galion Fire & EMS, Galion City Health Department, Galion City Schools, Galion Public Library and CSX Transportation. Topics covered include crossing the street and sidewalk safety, school bus and seat belt safety, fire safety, bicycle safety and good hygiene.
A “Safety City” complete with small buildings and traffic lights was constructed in the parking lot. Kids were able to ride bikes through the city in order to practice what they learned. They also received free bicycle helmets.
